Man, I really missed these skit videos!

On a random encounter list I found for the cursed swamp my party is in now, there was one that some skeletons were fed up, they're on strike and will gladly point out the necromancer's lair. The instant I said the word "strike" one of my players immediately started joking about "did they not read their union contracts?" etc. etc. so I was like okay, I'm turning this into a whole thing. It went from a simple "skeletons point out lair, go kill necromancer, back to main story" to there's a huge labor movement of the skeleton workforce striking for better conditions, and their strikes are being busted up by a nefarious group known as the Wightertons.

Whenever the party of my campaign wants to draw from the deck of many things I put the deck into an uno attack machine and make them press the button to dispense cards.

I have never been a fan of warlock flavor since it tends to make you a slave in the eyes of others instead of a student or someone with their own powers. To the point DMs think they can take your powers away like a cleric. However apart from that part I definitely like how it plays. Especially now that it has Skeleton pet. I just wish DND would make a Magus instead of making the Warlock take that role.

My DM loved to do this, listen to all our speculating and then steal our best ideas. It truly is brilliant because it just made us feel smart for "figuring it out."

For archfey warlock, I like the idea of getting a free misty step after casting an illusion or enchantment spell, but I feel like I will miss fey presence and beguiling defenses. Charm, beguilement and glamour are a big part of fey trickery, and it sounds like the subclass abilities no longer really have that.

For the rule about being late, it’s simple: you become a CPU. Like party members in RPGs not existing until combat. You make no story actions but I will play your character’s actions in combat so the others can actually still have a balanced party. If you don’t want that, don’t be late (although the occasional emergency happens and we’ll work with that.)

It's amazing how rarely the players catch on to my shenanigans, I'm not a genius weaving intricate plots, but if they think i am who am i to argue

"Spellcasting at level 1" Great "Full list of fighting styles from Fighter" Awesome "Forego fighting style for a bunch of free Cleric cantrips" Love it "Find Steed for free" Ballin' "More and varied uses of Channel Divinity" Radical "Smite is now a bonus action spell that can be cast once a day for free" REEEEEE they ruined Paladin forever literally unplayable REEEEEE!! One time my party were at an elven temple, and one member "imagine if we got attacked by drow" (For context, the city we were in was experiencing Drow raids.) Session ends with my character getting ambushed by a group of Drow assassins. DM later said how hard it was to keep a straight face since he had been planning the attack for a while and we sarcastically predicted it. One more story: lvl 3 my character ends up fighting a mirror image of herself and lost. The party was a little concerned but I was somehow unharmed so we continued on. We constanlty talked about what the consequences would be. Lvl 5 we enter a big city and my character gets arrested for mass murder. Losing the fight released an evil copy into the world and we had no idea.

Yeah... In the playtest, lucky was even more powerful than it is currently. They had it scale by proficiency bonus and made it a first level feat.

The only thing better is when they recognize a plot HOLE you didn't intend, but then immediately come up with a theory plugging it.

I did something my GM didn't expect. He seamlessly created an entire story arc and a new npc as a result.

I can't help but wonder how often the players actually do that?

This is why DMs always listen closely to what their players are saying, sometimes, they end up finding a plot that the DM didn't even anticipate, and it works so well with the story, that you can't help but add it.

one of my players made a joke about a plot point that will be near the end of the campaign and I just had to scream in my mind as they kept making jokes back and forth about it(note that we just started this campaign)

Best way to keep players from figuring out the plot? Come close and I'll whisper it to you... STOP MAKING THE DM A STORYTELLER WHEN THEY AREN'T!

My husband and I started playing because of our friends introduced it to us and was very nice. Somehow I was the one that came up with recording the game on my phone to remember things better and help All of us make proper notes. The DM’s wife started video recording while I did audio just in case the vid didn’t get to hear everything. And to remember our first play together. 😸 I also gave the DM two new story’s/map to use next time they played. I made one of them something that could be played for Christmas. Each of them with different endings depending on the player’s choices. From tear jerking sad, to Cheer for the fact they got that ending. My husband and I are introverted writers. I’d make a terrible DM. So I gave him those. My husband would likely make a good DM though.

I've been the DM for Out of the Abyss (the pre-written module) recently, and I'm the first half there's this Quaggoth named Derendil who says he's the Elven Prince of Nelrindenvane who was transformed by the evil wizard Terrestor into a Quaggoth form. Spoiler, he's just an insane Quaggoth and Nelrindenvane and Terrrstor both don't exist. However, since they first heard this story, 3 of my players have been repeatedly joking about how he's schizophrenic and none of it exists. They don't know that they're right yet, but I'm both laughing and crying internally whenever they make the joke

This is perfect. In music school you learn you can't break the rules until you set the expectations first. Once you realise the players are on to you, time to invent another level of intrigue. Especially if it fits a previous enemy schtick. "No, I am not Ricardo, I am his apprentice. Bwa HA HA HA"

Let’s be real, the players know that we DM’s do this. These days they hesitate to vocalize these things out of fear they’ll give us ideas. :(

List of changes: Warlock: - Pact Magic returns with the same progression and rules. - Level 1: Eldritch invocations are now available from level 1. Subclasses have been moved to level 3, and Pact Boons have been made into Eldritch Invocations that can be taken at level 1. Pact Boons have also seen the following improvements: - Pact of the Blade - From the way they talk about it, I think the weapon you summon with Pact of the Blade now uses your Charisma modifier. Glad Hexblade is dead but also oh my god it’s kind of worse but its also really, really cool. - Pact of the Tome - Not really talked about, but if you can modify more cantrips that Eldritch Blast, then getting access to a wider variety of cantrips is a buff. - Pact of the Chain - More special familiars have been added for each flavor of Patron. Skeleton familiars for Undead Warlocks, tiny sphinx for Celestials, etc. - Pact of the Talisman - This is the section about Pact Boons and this is certainly one of them. Level 2 Cunning Magic: Warlocks can regain an unspecified amount of Pact Magic back. I imagine it’ll be like one Spellslot or maybe you can Short Rest in a minute like the Monk could in the UA. It’s decent. - Level 3 Pact Spells: When you choose a subclass at 3rd level, you now automatically gain all the spells in the expanded spells list for your specific patron. These spells do not count against the number of spells you can prepare. Oh my god this gives Warlocks way more spells known, this is huge. - Warlocks gain an ability to speak directly with their Patron. I believe this was a free prep and use of the Contact Other Plane spell with no chance of failure in the most recent UA Warlock. I like it. - Mystic Arcanum returns. - Epic Boon added at 19th level. Archfey: - Now specializes in using an empowered Misty Step to debuff enemies. - Steps of the Fey: You can cast Misty Step a number of times per day (I assume Charisma modifier times per day) without expending a spell slot. Also, when you cast Misty Step (with or without a spell slot), you can add a buff to yourself, such as temp hp, or a debuff onto a nearby enemy, such as disadvantage on attack rolls against creatures other than the Warlock. - At higher levels you gain abilities to punish enemies for attacking you, such as inflicting psychic damage or turning yourself invisible. - 14th Level Bewitching Magic: Whenever you cast an Illusion or Enchantment spell, you can use Misty Step for free. Celestial: - I assume Healing Light returns. Gain d6s equal to Warlock Level + 1 that you can spend as a bonus action to heal yourself or allies. This would be a terrible healer subclass if you had to rely entirely on spell slots to heal. - Celestial Radiance returns with some changes though I didn’t catch any specifics. - Searing Vengeance returns. It’s literally Warlock Self-Res from Destiny 1 for anyone who played that game, however you can now use it on an ally. Fiend: - Spell list has been revisited - Level 3: Dark One’s Blessing has been moved to Level 3. It now also grants temporary hit points for you or an ally reducing a hostile creature to 0 hp within a certain range. - Level 6: Dark One’s Own Luck gains additional uses - Level 10 Fiendish Resilience: Magical weapons no longer bypass resistance on account of magical weapon damage likely no longer existing in the game. - Level 14: Hurl Through Hell returns, though I believe it has been nerfed. Great Old One: - Completely rebuilt like Archfey - Awakened Mind returns, - Psionic Spells: Enchantment and Illusion spells can be cast without verbal or Somantic components. In addition, when you deal damage with a Warlock spell, you can change the damage type to Psychic damage. - Clairvoyant Combatant: Gain bonus in combat to targets affected by your Awakened Mind feature. - Eldritch Hex: Hex gives disadvantage on Saving Throws. Kinda strong, but a little late IMHO. Warlocks also benefit strongly from the new and rebuilt Summon spells, which have been added into their subcalss spell lists.

Do we know if the new player's handbook is going to replace the old one in dndbeyond? I feel like they would just get rid of it to make room for the new one but idk

I love so much one gets it and the other really wants to be involved and guesses their way till they are on the same page. Done this with so many and most of the time they do get the plot and join in on the But what if
